The Finite charm, like the similar Finite Incantatem charm, is used to stop a spell's continuing effects. Finite seems to generally act on only one spell, where Finite Incantatem appears to act on all active spells in a locality.

In the Battle in the Ministry in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Neville is hit by a Tarantallegra jinx. Lupin uses the Finite charm to quiet Neville's legs.
In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, in the Room of Requirement, Crabbe uses the Descendo jinx to try to drop a pile of junk onto Ron. Harry stops the pile falling with the Finite charm.
Note that this spell, like all other working spells, seems to be based on Latin, and as such its incantation should be pronounced with three syllables rather than two.
