It is coined from the Latin verb 'protego', 'to protect' (lit. to cover over). In the seventh book several of the characters append this with other words, Proffessor Flitwick uses "Protego Horriblus" and Hermione uses "Protego Totalus" indicating that the strength of the spell can be altered, increasing its potency and/or range.
