In [[../../Books/Goblet of Fire/Chapter 1|Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire]] we read the story of how Tom Riddle Sr. and his parents were found dead one morning fifty years ago, and how the gardener, Frank Bryce, was suspected of their murders until it was found that they apparently had not been murdered by anything, but had simply died... possibly of fright. We also see how [[../../Characters/Lord Voldemort|Lord Voldemort]] has moved into that house, and we see him killing Frank. Other clues through the course of the book lead us to believe that Voldemort is using the house as his base of operations.
While no direct mention of the Manor is made in other books to date, we do see some of its environs in [[../../Magic/Pensieve|Dumbledore's Pensieve]] in [[../../Books/Half-Blood Prince|Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince]].

We already know that Voldemort created at least one [[../../Magic/Horcrux|Horcrux]] in this area, as it was embedded in the Gaunt signet ring that Voldemort had just stolen from his uncle [[../../Characters/Morfin Gaunt|Morfin Gaunt]]. Presumably, it was the murder of Tom Riddle Sr., his own despised Muggle father, that was used to create that Horcrux; that is the sort of irony that Voldemort would have liked. It is possible that Frank Bryce's murder was used to create the final Horcrux of the set that Voldemort was planning; again, bringing the circle to closure in that way would have appealed to Voldemort's sense of humour.
Whether this could be considered Voldemort's first murder or not is uncertain; it's likely that [[../../Characters/Moaning Myrtle|Moaning Myrtle]] was killed earlier, at his direction if not by him.
