We know that Professor Slughorn is more than a bit of a social climber, and that he seems to cut off those people who he feels don't offer him an "in" into the higher-flying parts of society. The fact that he acknowledges knowing Abraxus Malfoy would indicate that there was some fame or accomplishment in Abraxus' past to attract Slughorn's attention. We never find out, though, exactly what that accomplishment is.
