As part of his attempt to plea-bargain his way out of [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Places/Azkaban|Azkaban]], [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Characters/Igor Karkaroff|Igor Karkaroff]] accuses Travers of killing [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Characters/Marlene McKinnon|Marlene McKinnon]] and her family. While this is ancient history at the time, Karkaroff having been imprisoned during [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Characters/Lord Voldemort|Voldemort's]] first reign of terror, we see it in this book thanks to [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Characters/Albus Dumbledore|Professor Dumbledore's]] [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Magic/Pensieve|Pensieve]].

We first hear of Travers in this book when [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Characters/Kingsley Shacklebolt|Kingsley Shacklebolt]] tells us that Travers' hood had fallen off when Kingsley had cursed him during the escape from [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Places/Privet Drive|Privet Drive]]. At the time, Kingsley says that Travers is supposed to still be in [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Places/Azkaban|Azkaban]], but there evidently has been a mass breakout that hasn't been reported.

Travers is mentioned in passing when [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Characters/Harry Potter|Harry]] and [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Characters/Hermione Granger|Hermione]], invading the [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Places/Ministry of Magic|Ministry of Magic]] in search of the Locket [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Magic/Horcrux|Horcrux]], run into [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Characters/Dolores Umbridge|Dolores Umbridge]]. Dolores asks Hermione, who is disguised as [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Characters/Mafalda Hopkirk|Mafalda Hopkirk]], if Travers had sent her; evidently, Travers is then working in the Improper Use of Magic Office at a higher rank than Mafalda.

Travers is in [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Places/Diagon Alley|Diagon Alley]] when Hermione, [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Characters/Ron Weasley|Ron]], Harry, and [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Characters/Griphook|Griphook]] are on their way to break in to Gringott[[Muggles's Guide to Harry Potter/Places/Gringotts|Gringotts Wizarding Bank]]. As Hermione beingis disguised as [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Characters/Bellatrix Lestrange|Bellatrix Lestrange]], he is initially unsuspicious; however, he seems to sense some odd things happening as the scheme unfolds, and eventually Harry has to put him under the [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Magic/Imperio|Imperius curse]] to keep him out of the way. Under Harry's orders, then, he follows them into the tunnels, and finally Harry sends him off to try and hide himself.
