Dean, apparently of Muggle origins, like [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Characters/Harry Potter|Harry]], has never heard of [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Major Events/Quidditch|Quidditch]], and so has a poster of the West Ham football team that he puts up over his bed in the dormitory. [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Characters/Ron Weasley|Ron]], who had had an argument with Dean about football and how a game with only one ball and two goals could be any good, is seen at one point poking the poster with his wand to try and make the players move.
At Harry's first Quidditch match, [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Characters/Seamus Finnigan|Seamus]], [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Characters/Neville Longbottom|Neville]], and Dean have made a banner that reads "''Potter for President''". Dean, who is apparently something of an artist, had painted the Gryffindor lion underneath that, and [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Characters/Hermione Granger|Hermione]] had charmed it so that the paint flashed different colours. When the Snitch first appears, Harry is about to grab it when he is fouled by [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Characters/Marcus Flint|Marcus Flint]], the Slytherin team captain. Dean demands that the ref send Flint off, and Ron explains that you can't do that in Quidditch.
Later on in the year, when Harry, Neville and Hermione are caught wandering the corriders at night, Gryffindor house loses a total of 150 points, which puts them in last place. It is possible that Dean was one of the Gryffindors that was mad at Harry, Neville and Hermione for lowering their chances of getting the House Cup.
Towards the end of the year, [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Characters/Albus Dumbledore|Albus Dumbledore]] awards points to Harry, Ron, Hermione and Neville for their good actions that lead to stopping [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Characters/Quirinus Quirrell|Quirinus Quirrell]] from stealing the Sorcerer's Stone. The points that he awards them puts them ahead of Slytherin House, making them win the House Cup for the first time in seven years. It can be assumed that Dean was very happy by this.
At the end of the year, Dean rode the Hogwarts Express to go back to his parents.
