He asks if Harry, Ron, and Hermione could attend the funeral. Between the three of them, they decide that they will not go go; it's is such a silly thing to get detention over, after all.

Hermione says thatsuggests Harry should have another try at [[../../../Characters/Horace Slughorn|Professor Slughorn]]'s memory induring class, as it will be pretty sparse with all the students off taking Apparation tests. Ron suggests that Harry drinkusing the [[../../../Magic/Felix Felicis|Felix Felicis potion]] to help himHarry get Professor Slughorn's memory. Hermione agrees, but Harry is reluctant; he had been saving that for somethingit, thoughalthough he's notis sureunsure for what – thoughbut it has something to do with [[../../../Characters/Ginny Weasley|Ginny]] breaking up with [[../../../Characters/Dean Thomas|Dean]], and Ron somehow getting a girlfriend he actually likedlikes.

With only three people in Potions class, Professor Slughorn sets them an open challenge: make whatwhatever they like. Slughorn is very impressed with Harry's Euphoria Elixir, but again manages to escape when hethey finds himselfare alone with Harry. Returning to the Gryffindor commonCommon room, Harry findslearns that Hermione has passed Apparation, but Ron failed by half an eyebrow.

Following a detour the potion seems to suggest, Harry runs into Slughorn who, upon learning of Aragog's death, notes that [[../../../Magic/Acromantula|acromantula]] venom is particularly valuable. Recognizing that this may providebe an opportunity for him to entice Slughorn to share his memory about [[../../../Characters/Tom Marvolo Riddle|Tom Riddle]], Harry invites him to attend the funeral. Slughorn arrives at Hagrid's hut well dressed and with bottles of mead. After an emotional service, and with help from aHarry's flawless and surreptitious refilling charm by Harry, Hagrid and Slughorn getbecome drunk. Knowing Slughorn will not remember nothing the incident thenext morning after, Harry attemptstalks to get the memory by recountingabout his parents' death. Slughorn sadly hearsHearing how his favorite student, [[../../../Characters/Lily Potter|Lily Evans]], died, causes Slughorn to become extremely sad. Harry then says to Slughorn that he needs the memory ofabout Tom Riddle, usingreminding the facthim that he is Lily's son toas persuadea Slughornpersuasion tactic. Harry finally convinces Slughorn that he is the "Chosen One" and the teary-eyed professor yields histhe memory of Tom Riddle. Slughorn falls asleep after handing over the wisps of memory to Harry.
