[[../../../Characters/Harry Potter|Harry]] is sitting with [[../../../Characters/Ron Weasley|Ron]] and [[../../../Characters/Hermione Granger|Hermione]] as they study [[../../../Magic/Apparation|Apparation]] handbooks in preparation for their test. A girl approaches with a message for Harry from [[../../../Characters/Rubeus Hagrid|Hagrid]], saying that [[../../../Characters/Aragog|Aragog]], the giant spider, has died. He asks if Harry, Ron, and Hermione could attend the funeral. Between the three of them, they decide that they will not go; it's such a silly thing to get detention over, after all.
The message from [[../../../Characters/Rubeus Hagrid|Hagrid]] informs [[../../../Characters/Harry Potter|Harry]] that [[../../../Characters/Aragog|Aragog]], the giant spider, has died. He asks if Harry, Ron, and Hermione could attend the funeral. Hermione and Ron suggest that Harry drink the [[../../../Magic/Felix Felicis|Felix Felicis potion]] to help him get [[../../../Characters/Horace Slughorn|Professor Slughorn]]'s memory. He does, and is compelled by the potion to head for Hagrid's cabin. On his way there, he luckily triggers incidents that will break up [[../../../Characters/Ginny Weasley|Ginny]] and [[../../../Characters/Dean Thomas|Dean]] and also Ron and [[../../../Characters/Lavender Brown|Lavender]]. Following a detour the potion seems to suggest, he runs into Slughorn who, upon learning of Aragog's death, notes that acromantula venom is particularly valuable. Recognizing that this may provide an opportunity for him to entice Slughorn to share his memory about [[../../../Characters/Tom Marvolo Riddle|Tom Riddle]], Harry invites him to attend the funeral. Slughorn arrives at Hagrid's hut well dressed and with bottles of mead. After an emotional service, Hagrid and Slughorn get drunk. Knowing Slughorn will not remember the incident the morning after, Harry attempts to get the memory by recounting his parents' death. Slughorn sadly hears how his favorite student, [[../../../Characters/Lily Potter|Lily Evans]], died. Harry then says to Slughorn that he needs the memory of Tom Riddle, using the fact that he is Lily's son to persuade Slughorn. Harry finally convinces Slughorn that he is the "Chosen One" and the teary-eyed professor yields his memory of Tom Riddle. Slughorn falls asleep after handing over the wisps of memory to Harry.▼
Hermione says that Harry should have another try at [[../../../Characters/Horace Slughorn|Professor Slughorn]]'s memory in class, as it will be pretty sparse with all the students off taking Apparation tests. Ron suggests that Harry drink the [[../../../Magic/Felix Felicis|Felix Felicis potion]] to help him get Professor Slughorn's memory. Hermione agrees, but Harry is reluctant; he had been saving that for something, though he's not sure what – though it has something to do with [[../../../Characters/Ginny Weasley|Ginny]] breaking up with [[../../../Characters/Dean Thomas|Dean]], and Ron somehow getting a girlfriend he actually liked.
With only three people in Potions class, Professor Slughorn sets them an open challenge: make what they like. Slughorn is very impressed with Harry's Euphoria Elixir, but again manages to escape when he finds himself alone with Harry. Returning to the Gryffindor common room, Harry finds that Hermione has passed Apparation, but Ron failed by half an eyebrow.
Harry, Hermione, and Ron now head up to the dorm, where Harry takes Felix Felicis. He promptly, much to the amazement of the other two, decides to go down to Hagrid's hut to attend the funeral of Aragog. With the [[../../../Magic/Invisibility Cloak|Invisibility cloak]] on, and Ron and Hermione following, they head down to the common room, where Lavender sees Ron and Hermione arriving from the boy's dorms and flies into a jealous rage. Heading out through the portrait hole, he brushes against Ginny; she thinks Dean had done it, and rounds on him.
