Although Harry is a naturally intelligent and talented wizard, academically he is a rather lazy student, usually getting by on average or just-above average grades and often relying on Hermione's help. Potions, in particular, has always proved tedious and difficult for him, partially due to his strained relationship with Professor Snape. It is only when a subject especially interests Harry, like Defence Against the Dark Arts, that he works hard and excels at it. For the first time, he is challenged to learn about Potions after discovering a talented former student's innovated methods to brewing standard potions more efficiently. Harry is a non-traditional learner, and while Snape has ineffectively taught him Potions, the Half-Blood Prince, in a brief period of time, has inspired him to learn more than he has over the past five years, even though it is with unorthodox, short-cut methods. Although Hermione is correct that he is cheating, Harry has been given an alternative learning avenue that has aroused his academic curiosity and will serve him later in the book.

This chapter shows another hint that Harry is developing feeling for Ginny. In the first potions class, when Harry smells the love potion, he smells "something flowery that he thought he smelled at the Burrow". And later, when thay meet Ginny, Harry "smells the flowery smell he smelled in Slughorn's class". The fact that the love potion has the scent of the thing that attracts us & is differint to each person, & that Harry smells Ginny scent is a sigh that he finds her attractive though Harry has still not realized it yet.
