Frequent deaths and disappearances are occurring throughout the Wizarding world. On [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Characters/Harry Potter|Harry]]'s birthday, [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Characters/Remus Lupin|Lupin]] brings news that Death Eaters killed [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Characters/Igor Karkaroff|Igor Karkaroff]]; [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Characters/Bill Weasley|Bill]] mentions that [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Characters/Florean Fortescue|Florean Fortescue]], ownerwho ofowns the ice cream parlour in [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Places/Diagon Alley|Diagon Alley]], is gone, and [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Characters/Arthur Weasley|Mr. Weasley]] reports that [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Characters/Ollivander|Ollivander]], the wand maker, is missing.
 
The following day, booklists arrive, along with an announcement that Harry is Quidditch captain. According to [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Characters/Hermione Granger|Hermione]] says, that gives Harry equal status with the [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Major Events/Prefects|Prefects]], allowing him to use their luxurious bathroom. [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Characters/Molly Weasley|Mrs. Weasley]] saysdoes theynot cannotwant putto offdelay the trip to Diagon Alley any longer.
 
On Saturday, Bill, who works for Gringotts, hands Harry a money bag retrieved from Harry's vault; Gringotts' security is now so tight that it takes about five hours to get inside. Harry, Hermione, and the Weasleys go shopping in Diagon Alley, accompanied by [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Characters/Rubeus Hagrid|Hagrid]]. In Madam Malkin's Robes for All Occasions shop, Harry, Hermione, and [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Characters/Ron Weasley|Ron]] have a nasty encounter with [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Characters/Draco Malfoy|Draco Malfoy]] and his snobbish mother, [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Characters/Narcissa Malfoy|Narcissa]]. When the dressmaker tries lifting Draco's left robe sleeve, he jerks his arm away, claiming she stuck him with a pin; he and his mother quickly leave.
 
Harry, Ron, and Hermione gohead tofor Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes, [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Characters/Fred and George Weasley|Fred and George]]'s joke shop, which is enjoying a booming trade. Not only are they selling joke items selling well, but theythe Twins are also supplying spell-deflecting Shield Hats, Cloaks, and Gloves, and other serious magical items to the Ministry of Magic (presumably for the war against [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Characters/Lord Voldemort|Voldemort]]).
 
Harry spots Draco passing the shop alone. Using the [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Magic/Invisibility Cloak|Invisibility Cloak]], Harry, Ron, and Hermione trail Draco to [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Places/Knockturn Alley|Knockturn Alley]] where he goes to [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Places/Borgin and Burkes|Borgin and Burkes]]. Using Weasley's [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Magic/Extendable Ear|Extendable Ears]], they overhear Draco asking how to repair something. Draco threatens Borgin, showing him something on his arm, but the trio is unable to see it because it is hidden by the large black cabinet that Harry hid inside [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Books/Chamber of Secrets/Chapter 4|four years earlier]] blocks their view. Draco sayswarns that [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Characters/Fenrir Greyback|Fenrir Greyback]], a 'family friend', will be, "dropping in from time-to-time to see that you're giving this matter your full attention." Malfoy also orders him to reservereserves an item for himhimself, andordering notBorgin to tellkeep it anyonesecret. After Draco leavesexits, Hermione enters the store pretending to be looking for a birthday present for her "friend" Draco. She hopesHoping to learn what Draco askedreserved, Borgin to reserve, but heinstead orders her to leave.
 
They return to Fred and George's store under the Invisibility Cloak, and, in response to Mrs. Weasley's worried questions about their whereabouts, claim they were in the backroom.
