Hermione leads Umbridge and Harry into the Forbidden Forest. Harry has no idea where Hermione is taking them, although he notices that she has avoided the path leading to Grawp and is deliberately being noisy. Before long an arrow whizzes through the air, hitting a tree. About fifty Centaurs appear, demanding to know why the humans are in their forest. Believing they are inferior half-breeds, a haughty Umbridge unleashes an insulting tirade, infuriating the Centaurs. One picks Umbridge up into the air over his head and carries the hysterically screaming woman off into the woods. Hermione tries explaining the situation to the other Centaurs, hoping to gain their sympathy, but they only become angrier at being involved in human affairs and want to attack her and Harry. ConsideringDespite her protests that Centaurs do not attack "foals", they consider Harry and Hermione to be as devious as their adult counterparts,. As they areas about to attack them when, Grawp crashes through the trees, frantically calling for Hagrid. The panicked Centaurs begin shooting arrowshim atwith himarrows. Enraged, the Giant howls in pain as the arrows become embedded in his flesh. Harry and Hermione get away amid the confusion.

Meanwhile, Ginny, Luna, Ron, and Neville have escaped the Inquisitorial Guard using their Defensive Arts skills and find Harry and Hermione in the forest. When Harry says he is going to the Ministry to find Sirius, the others insist on going with him. Harry prefers that only Ron go with him, feeling that Neville, Luna, and Ginny are the weakest D.A. members, and that even Hermione is unsuitable in a combat situation. The others all refuse to stay behind. However, without their confiscated brooms, the group is unable to go anywhere. Luna spots the Thestral herd approaching, attracted by Grawp's splattered blood on Harry and Hermione's robes. Luna suggests riding them to London, although Ron, Hermione, and Ginny are reluctant to fly on creatures they are unable to see.
