We learn thelater reason forthat Draco's taunt at Christmas, andrelates thatto Sirius Black isbeing widely believed to have betrayed Harry's parents to Voldemort. While this belief is later disproved, it has a certain consistency about it, and Harry will be driven by this belief.
 
Hermione's constant disappearing and reappearing is due to a [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Magic/Time-Turner|Time-Turner]], that allows her to attend more classes than physically possible. Hermione's bag splitting open distracts us from questioning where she was and how she suddenly vanished and reappeared. Throughout the book, Hermione similarly appears in places where she had not been mere moments before, and always there is some distraction that prevents us from wondering too much about her abrupt appearances.
