On Harry's birthday, Harry and [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Characters/Vernon Dursley|Uncle Vernon]] have an argument during breakfast, triggered by [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Characters/Dudley Dursley|Dudley]] commanding Harry to pass him the bacon. Harry told himreplied he forgot the magic word. Merely mentioning magic is enough to send Uncle Vernon into a towering rage.
 
Uncle Vernon launches into his plans for that evening, entertaining a prospective client, Mr. Mason. Harry's partrole is simple: he will remain in his room, making no noise, pretending not to be there.
 
While in the yard later that day, Harry, looking at the hedge, sees two large, green eyes staring back at him. Before he can investigate further, Dudley nastily reminds him thatHarry it is Harry'shis birthday and asks why all his "weird friends" have not bothered to send any cards or presents. Harry teasesteasingly him by saying thatsays he is trying to magically set the garden hedge on fire with magic, althoughthough Hogwarts students are actually not allowedforbidden to practice magic outside school. But Dudley tattles to [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Characters/Petunia Dursley|Aunt Petunia]], and, as a punishment for having mentionedmentioning magic, Harry has tomust clean the house all day.
 
That evening, as Mr. and Mrs. Mason arrive, Harry is sent to his bedroom. However, when Harry enters, he is shocked to find someone sitting on histhe bed.
