Although Harry suspects Snape set the Troll loose into the castle, it was actually Professor Quirrell, who hoped to get into the forbidden corridor to steal the [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Magic/Philosopher's Stone|Philosopher's Stone]] that can restore [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Characters/Lord Voldemort|Voldemort]]'s body. It is learned later in the story that a Troll is one of the security devices in the dungeon that protects the Stone, and that it was Quirrell who provided it. Quirrell later tells Harry that he has a particular talent with Trolls. Given Quirrell's known facility with these creatures, his panicked reaction at the feast must have seemed suspicious and out-of-character to Snape, who suspected Quirrell was creating a diversion so he could get into the third-floor corridor. Snape attempted to head him off, getting his leg bitten by "Fluffy," the three-headed dog, in the process. One must also assume that Dumbledore's suspicions were raised by this, as Dumbledore would know that Quirrell provided a Troll to defend the Stone. This perhaps explains why, in Snape's memories [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Books/Deathly Hallows/Chapter 33|seven years later]], we see Dumbledore suggesting that Snape keep an eye on Quirrell. We do not know if this memory was made before or after this chapter's events.
TheAs formidable as Hogwarts always seems, the Troll in the castle is notonly the onlyfirst time that Hogwartswe see the school's security isbeing breached. In [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Books/Prisoner of Azkaban/Chapter 8|''Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban'']], Harry's fugitive godfather, [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Characters/Sirius Black|Sirius Black]], slips into the castle at night, apparently through a hidden passageway, and ostensibly to attack Harry, but actually for another reason. In [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Books/Half-Blood Prince/Chapter 27|''Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince'']], [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Major Events/Death Eaters|Death Eaters]], aided by Draco Malfoy, are also able to secretly enter the castle through a [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Magic/Disappearing Cabinets|Vanishing Cabinet]] connected to its twin in [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Places/Borgin and Burkes|Borgin & Burkes]], a shop in [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Places/Knockturn Alley|Knockturn Alley]], resulting in a major battle between the invaders and the Hogwarts staff, [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Major Events/Dumbledore's Army|Dumbledore's Army]], and the [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Major Events/Order of the Phoenix|Order of the Phoenix]]. In [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Books/Deathly Hallows/Chapter 31|''Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows'']] there are two ways seen into the castle. In addition to the tunnel to the [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Places/Shrieking Shack|Shrieking Shack]] which is first seen in ''Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban'', therein is''Deathly alsoHallows'', a new secret passageway fromis formed leading to [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Characters/Aberforth Dumbledore|Aberforth Dumbledore]]'s [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Places/Hog's Head Inn|establishment]] that opens up and leads tofrom the [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Places/Room of Requirement|Room of Requirement]], where ''Dumbledore's Army'' has been hiding out. This is how the Trio, and later, Harry's allies, enter the castle shortly before the final battle with [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Characters/Lord Voldemort|Voldemort]]. The One-Eyed Witch tunnel that Harry uses in ''Prisoner of Azkaban'' to sneak into Hogsmeade, will, by book 7, have been discovered and closed off. Also, Voldemort and his Death Eater army assault Hogwarts near the book's end. Though the faculty temporarily fend them off, the protective charms surrounding the castle are eventually broken by the enemy.
