Neville is first seen on the Hogwarts Express platform, telling an exasperated older lady with a stuffed vulture on her hat that his pet toad, Trevor, is missing. At the Welcome Feast, Neville is Sorted into Gryffindor House. Harry notes that the [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Characters/Sorting Hat|Sorting Hat]] takes a long time before deciding that Neville is a Gryffindor. During the feast, we overhear that Neville's grandmother was extremely pleased when Neville received his Hogwarts letter. His family had feared Neville was unable to perform magic, and had applied some extreme measures on him to prove otherwise.
