When Harry opens the Golden Egg to solve the puzzle for the [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Major Events/Second Task|Second Task]], it emits a loud, screeching noise. Neville, terrified, thinks it sounds like someone being tortured.
 
Neville invites Hermione to the [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Major Events/Yule Ball|Yule Ball]], but she has a date. When HarryRon invitestells [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Characters/Ginny Weasley|Ginny]] to go with Harry, she says Neville has already asked her. At the Yule Ball, Harry notes that Neville's dancing is even worse than his own; he seems to be treading on Ginny's feet rather a lot.
 
While left alone in Dumbledore's office, Harry discovers a [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Magic/Pensieve|Pensieve]]. It contains Dumbledore's memories, including one of a [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Magic/Wizengamot|Wizengamot trial]]. Four Death Eaters, [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Characters/Bellatrix Lestrange|Bellatrix Lestrange]], [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Characters/Rabastan Lestrange|Rabastan Lestrange]], [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Characters/Rodolphus Lestrange|Rodolphus Lestrange]], and [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Characters/Barty Crouch Jr.|Barty Crouch Jr.]], are being tried for torturing [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Characters/Frank Longbottom|Frank]] and [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Characters/Alice Longbottom|Alice Longbottom]] to insanity in an attempt to extract information about Voldemort. The Longbottoms, Neville's parents, were left incurably insane and now permanently reside in [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Places/St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries|St. Mungo's Hospital]]. Neville has since been raised by his grandmother. Dumbledore cautions Harry never to mention this to Ron and Hermione—it is Neville's secret to reveal.
