Neville overheardoverhears Draco boasting that he will catch Harry and Hermione in the act, and goes to warn them, but Professor McGonagall catches him being out after hours. Harry and Hermione are intercepted by Filch and brought before McGonagall, along with Neville. She assumes the three students were conspiring to get Draco in trouble and penalizes each fifty house points and gives them a detention. Draco, who had been caught earlier, is also penalized.

Draco and Neville initially are teamed together, but Draco deliberately scares Neville. Hagrid then re-shuffles the groups, pairing Harry with Draco and [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Characters/Fang|Fang]], and making up another group himself with Hermione and Neville.
When Neville discovers the Trio's plan to prevent the Philosopher's Stone from being stolen and given to [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Characters/Lord Voldemort|Voldemort]], he attempts to intervene, saying they have already lost Gryffindor enough House points. Hermione reluctantly [[Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter/Magic/Petrificus Totalis|immobilizes Neville]].
At the Leaving Feast, Dumbledore awards Neville ten House points for having the courage to stand up to his friends. This is the first time Neville has won any points for anything, and it wins Gryffindor the House Cup.
