Overview
The fourth book in the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is told from the viewpoint of the now fourteen-year-old Harry. Apart from the usual magic, events at Hogwarts School, and frustration of the Dursleys, it includes a visit to the Quidditch World Cup, and an ancient tournament that, after a hiatus of over a century, is being restarted at Hogwarts School. Darker and more mature than the preceding entries in the series, this book again shows us Harry maturing and gaining strength in preparation to fight the gathering darkness.

Chapter 1
Harry Potter spends the end of his summer with the Weasleys in anticipation of attending the Quidditch World Cup. During the Cup, Death Eaters attack muggle bystanders, but flee when the Dark Mark - Voldemort's sign - mysteriously appears overhead. It is determined that the sign was conjured with a wand found withWinky, a House-Elf belonging to Barty Crouch, a respected Ministry of Magic official. Winky is fired by her master. Crouch's cruel treatment of Winky prompts Hermione to start campaigning for elves' rights.

Chapter 16
Arriving at Hogwarts, Harry learns that the dangerous Triwizard Tournament has been reinstated and is being held at Hogwarts. Students wishing to enter place their names into the Goblet of Fire, an ancient magical artifact that will shoot out one name from each competing wizarding school, (Hogwarts, Beauxbatons, and Durmstrang). After selecting Viktor Krum from Durmstrang, Fleur Delacour from Beauxbatons, and Cedric Diggory from Hogwarts, the Goblet unexpectedly ejects a fourth name—Harry Potter—even though he is too young and never entered his own name. Harry is forced to participate, however, to many's outrage, and he is accused of cheating.

With help from his friends and teachers, Harry survives the first two Triwizard challenges. During this time, his relationship with Ron Weasley is strained by Harry's sudden explosion of fame. This fame soon backfires, as Daily Prophet reporter Rita Skeeter digs deep to find (or fabricate) anything that will tarnish Harry's reputation. Harry and Ron's friendship is saved when Ron realises just how perilous the Tournament really is.

For the final challenge, the four competitors must navigate through a maze populated by dangerous creatures. Harry and Cedric reach the trophy together, and because they helped they each other, agree to grab it simultaneously, guaranteeing a Hogwarts victory.

Unknown to them, the trophy is actually a Portkey, a magical transportation device that sends them to a graveyard. Awaiting are Peter Pettigrew (also known as Wormtail) and Lord Voldemort. Peter kills Cedric using the unstoppable Avada Kedavra curse, then uses Harry's blood in a macabre ritual that restores Voldemort's body. He is more powerful than before and is now immune to the charm that has protected Harry since he was a baby. Voldemort then summons the Death Eaters and attempts to kill Harry to prove that "the boy who lived" will not be his undoing again.

However, because Harry's and Voldemort's wands are formed from the same core, a feather from Dumbledore's phoenix, Fawkes, a phenomenon known as Priori Incantatem occurs. The wands streams interlock, forcing Voldemort's to regurgitate ghostly echoes of its past victims, including Harry's parents. The echoes fend off Voldemort while Harry escapes to the portkey and transports himself and Cedric's body back to Hogwarts.

On reaching Hogwarts, Harry lands amid the confusion caused by his disappearance. He is led to the castle by Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher and Auror (Dark-wizard-catcher), Professor Alastor Moody. Just as Harry thinks he is safe, Moody reveals himself as a Death Eater, saying that it was he who entered Harry's name into the Goblet and ensured that he made it through the tournament to be delivered to Voldemort. As Moody is about to kill Harry, Dumbledore, Snape, and McGonagall burst into the room and disarm him. After Dumbledore's interrogation and Snape's truth serum, it is revealed that "Moody" is actually Barty Crouch's son. He has been using Polyjuice potion to diguise himself as Professor Moody. The real Moody has been imprisoned in a magical trunk for the entire year.

Knowing Voldemort has arisen, Dumbledore revives the Order of the Phoenix. Snape and the Durmstrang Headmaster, Igor Karkarov, are revealed as ex-Death Eaters. Before Crouch Jr. can repeat his confession, Minister of Magic, Cornelius Fudge orders his soul sucked out by a Dementor. The Minister refuses to believe that Voldemort has arisen on the word of Dumbledore and Harry. As a result, Dumbledore is removed from several important posts within the wizard community, and Harry Potter's reputation is judiciously trampled.
